I think I might just be paranoid but is there any real risk in torrenting?

Yes.

Depends on the country and jurisdiction you reside in. In most Western countries possession is normally not illegal. Production, sale and distribution usually is. I don't know of any company that specifically targets users for copyright infringement, since their technically not a legal business in most places.

I suggest using a VPN if you are worried about it being monitored, though I doubt it would ever be an issue as for local police tracking or charging you for such material. Storage is more of an issue, but again if you're worried just encrypt and store it somewhere (WinRAR is easy it use and has this ability).

I found that Truecrypt is easier to use. You make a virtual hard drive and mount it through Truecrypt. The file itself just looks like a blank data file, and it encrypted.

As for a VPN, Hotspot Shield is free and absurdly easy to use.

Is there a less costly way to hide activity than using a VPN?

You can use TOR, but it loads most pages at 56k modem speeds. The positive side is it's free and very secure.

I'm told though that if you download anything (including streaming videos) will reveal your actual IP though.

There are a lot of things on TOR that can reveal your IP, including scripts like Java and Flash, which is what a lot of file hosting sites use to enable downloads.

Basically, the more private you want to remain, the more you have to sacrifice. If you're in a situation where you have to take these kinds of measures to keep your interest in zoophilia from being discovered, you probably need to give up looking at this kind of material, or change your location/career/lifestyle.

As long as it doesn't contain underage humans, possessing it is usually legal in the US. Performing it or making it is not legal.

in the USA, If you ever plan on running for office or applying for a government high-security position, you can expect to have a lot of your personal life scrutinized.

But in most cases what they'll be looking for are security risks, things that people could use to blackmail you. High debt, gambling, incriminating pictures of yourself, poor computer security habits, etc. So in my opinion, the act of torrenting files alone probably puts you at a higher risk than what you're torrenting.

If you don't plan on becoming someone who attends state dinners or works at area 51, you'll probably be fine, but remember to encrypt your files with Trucrypt, don't store anything on work computers, completely reformat and write-over old hard drives before giving away or upgrading your computer, and always use the latest and best malware/virus protection, and never use your credit card or other personally identifiable information online when pursuing your... "interests."
