Frieda shows the effects of loneliness.

Erich, her husband, shows the causes of loneliness.

I have always felt different. While in community college I found Erich's informative book, The Escape From Freedom. In medieval times you became what your parents were. In ancient times you married who your parents wanted you to marry. Now, you have freedom. But, it causes problems, particularly social alienation (feeling lonely even when you are surrounded by people).

Fromm had an answer to the alienation problem. Be spontaneous. Be yourself and accept the universe for what it is.
