I had confused him for Alton Brown.

I can see why. He's Alton sans bow-tie. And he shits in your cornflakes.

Pure breeding is bad. It's making dogs look like mutants.

German shepherds are the sexiest, most handsome dog to me, even nicer looking than natural wolves because they have sweeter, less "sharp" features, but the modern purebreed shepherds are looking really, really bad, their rear legs are bent and their hips are so messed up many of them can't even jump properly and I'm sure anyone who knows about dogs knows how common and terrible shepherd hip problems are.

My shep was a purebreed and he died of a neurological disorder before he was 7. I don't know if it was related to his breeding but I've never known a shepherd owner who hasn't talked about their health problems. Meanwhile I had a grandparent with a small/medium sized mutt dog that lived to almost 17.

Some of the prettiest dogs I've seen from a, uhm, zoophile perspective of attractiveness have been various mixes of retrievers, German shepherds, malamutes, huskies and Australian shepherds and the other large hunting or working breeds. Sometimes some really nice examples over on /r/animalromance.

It's hard to separate breeder apologia from solid information, so I want to know what y'all think about this. I've heard that there are "field line" dogs that are still purebreds but are bred for working traits rather than conformation shows. Are field line dogs healthy?

It depends on the breeder, but generally I would say field-line dogs are more healthy than show-line. I don't have studies on hand to back this up, it's just based on what I've experienced in the "dog world".

On the other hand, I've seen some working dogs that are SO high-strung they're almost neurotic. It almost seems like the breeders made a trade-off between the physical and mental health.

Edit: I'd like to add that, personally, I am not against pure breeds as a whole. There are pros and cons to both purebreds and mutts. What is "better" just depends on what you're looking for in a dog.
