I didn't see this linked before. An interesting review of the current state of zoo research as of about 2010.

It's good to see this type of thing, thanks for the link. I've barely gotten into it, but so far, it seems like a fair analysis.
Although I do have one question; what does everyone think of the term bestiality? I've always taken it to simply mean sex between humans and animals, but lately, I've been getting the impression that even zoo sympathizers have some negative associations with the word. Terminology changes (not to mention, this was written five years ago in German using sources that weren't in German, and then the whole thing was unofficially translated to English some time later), but is there any consensus on what bestiality means?

In the general zoo community it seems to be a slightly negative term implying a lack of concern for animals and only a desire to get off... I think that's a misnomer but it is how it is used. (Really it just means porking an animal) In the wider world it seems to be variable between the act itself and bestial or behaving in an animal like way. It can have very negative aspects and is often used in conjunciton with zoosadism and pedophlia. (An act of violence against animals can be called bestiality for example, even when it is not sexually motivated)
At least that's been my experience. I use the terms zoosexual(the condition) and bestiality(the act) without negative connotations now.

I was thinking about this the other day. I've just finished reading Surface Detail, and it contains the only incidence I've seen of the use of the word "bestiality" in the sense of "Bestial in nature, savagery, inhumanity, like (or akin to) an animal". It was a description of a simulated Hell.
There are some people who have weird ideas that being a radical islamist means you suddenly want to have sex with goats.
But many people also use the word in the context of extreme violence.

It entirely has to do with the fact that bestiality refers to simply an action alone. It carries a negative connotation to it because of how it may or may not involve the person actually caring for the animal or even appreciating the animal at all. As a result, bestiality can insinuate maltreatment to animals in some cases, although that is not nearly what it means by definition.

The original author apparently doesn't want this going around. Nuf said. Don't know who did the scribd thing. The original paper in german is freely available.
