When looking to buy an intact dog, what's a good reason for when people ask why you one intact? (self.zoophilia)
submitted 2015-04-03 18:55:37 by [deleted]

I recently made a post on Craigslist and the first response I got was someone asking why. I panicked and said it was for possibly breeding later and apparently that's really looked down upon, understandably. What else could I have done?

You could say you would be using the dog for showing, but this only works if the dog is registered with the AKC.

There have been studies done and new research published recently that indicates spay/neuter (especially early in life) is actually unhealthy and has negative impacts on dogs' wellbeing, going against what most people these days have been taught to think. I don't have any links right now on hand, but you could look into that and give that as your explanation. That's what I'll be saying when I look for an intact dog in the future, from Craigslist, breeder, or otherwise. Along with how I think that responsible pet ownership shouldn't have to require surgery.

If you find some links about the negative health effects, you could send them to people like that who ask why you're looking for an intact dog. Or just tell them that's why without any links and only mention there are recent studies, you're not obligated to explain yourself to somebody online. People who go out of their way to ask probably just want to preach their pro-spay/neuter-no-matter-what spiel to you anyway.

Also on the comment about showing, that's true too. A purebred dog can be registered with AKC (American Kennel Club), UKC (United Kennel Club), or any breed-specific clubs.

If I get some extra time here soon I'll see if I can find some links about the adverse health effects of spay/neuter for you, if you want, and post them here.

Wow thanks I never thought of that

No problem, 1gaydog posted some links if you want more info on spaying/neutering and health. The first one especially has a lot of information and sources.

The most common argument I've heard is that spaying/neutering lowers cancer risks in later life.

But that applies equally to people, too :P

1gaydog ζ 2 points on 2015-04-04 04:06:05

Alright, so neutering does prevent testicular cancer, and spaying does prevent ovarian cancer... of course, because if you remove an organ you can't get cancer there! :P

ETA: But they do raise the risk of some other types of cancer.

yelikedags 1 point on 2015-04-04 08:14:42

Breast cancer. It goes down something like 70 percent after spaying iirc

1gaydog ζ 1 point on 2015-04-04 09:18:19

Indeed, especially if done before the first heat cycle, but is it worth the other possible problems? That's up to you.

Spaying also practically eliminates the risk of pyometra (but then again, so would a hysterectomy).

I'm not against speutering in all circumstances ever; I encourage you to research the risks AND the benefits and choose what is best for your dog and your situation.

Is what you'd say to someone who is arguing for the snip.

Personally i enjoy all parts of a dog. Especially the dangly bits. Like ears and jowls and balls and sheathes

I didn't mean to offend, if it came across that way. I meant "you" in general, not you specifically. x3

Oh i know. We cool.

The only preventive surgery against cancer I've heard of is Angelina Jolie.

Actually a doctor said about Angelina Jolie's decision: "It is a very personal decision and one that should be made with good medical information." I really wonder how many dog owners can say this.

What Battlecrops said. I prefer to leave my dogs intact because of the health effects of spaying and neutering, not just because of my zoo interests. Those hormones are important for more than just sex, they are needed for general growth and development.

There are other options for sterilization (such as vasectomy and hysterectomy) that are worth looking into, but unfortunately not many vets offer them right now, and they are more expensive than traditional speutering. I hope this will change as more research comes out.

OP here's a few posts from my blog with some links and discussion if you want more information.

"it is needlessly cruel to mutilate an animal purely for the owners convenience."

DanielArtaxes Gay|Furry|Libertarian|Zoosexual 7 points on 2015-04-03 23:33:46

My thoughts exactly, having sex with animals is "wrong" because they "can't consent" but mutilating them and depriving them of there sex drive with out there consent is "normal" and "good for them." I don't think I will ever understand people...

yetshi 1 point on 2015-04-04 02:33:55

its a good line, ends the conversation right there and puts them in the defensive position, helps you in the negotiation on the dogs price.

Unless they had a dog to sell, you don't have to even acknowledge them.

zoozooz 1 point on 2015-04-03 23:27:09

Maybe it's not a very good idea, to say that, but...

"I prefer it that way."

Why do they need to know more?

"Why?"

"I just prefer it that way."

"Are you going to breed?"

"I'm going to be a responsible owner who prevents unwanted litters."

"But why intact?"

"Because I prefer it that way. Look, if you don't want to give me an intact dog, it's okay, I get one elsewhere. I just prefer it that way."

Or so I imagine it.

incredibledentist 1 point on 2015-04-04 01:48:41

Oh, but on OP's actual point: if you posted to Craigslist asking if anyone has a dog with balls, it's kind of understandable why responders would wonder why you'd specify that.

Do you get a local paper where you are? My local paper had a husky dog and husky bitches for sale for about $300-$400 last night, for example.

My brother sold his spaniel puppies for about $700 each in the local paper over the past few months. Pedigree, kennel club registered pups, though.

incredibledentist 1 point on 2015-04-04 01:52:53

Incidentally, I'd like to add that I prefer mutts. Pure, or inbred dogs have so many health problems. My own dogs are pure mongrels.
