New CSS! (self.zoophilia)
submitted 2015-04-19 20:53:54 by [deleted]

Hello!

With immense thanks to /u/AliastheReindeerPone, we have a new stylesheet. Let us know what you think!

There are some issues that have to be ironed out, such as flair, opacity and text fields. If you have other gripes, please voice your concerns here.

I did notice a complaint about the animated header. I personally enjoy the color, but if others agree with /u/JonasCliver, then I might have a compromise. It's currently on display at /r/ZetaBeta if anyone would care to take a look.

Essentially, I replaced night mode (Which wasn't all that readable in /r/dscvry to begin with) with rainbow mode. This way the header is a solid blue by default, and by clicking the icon in the top right corner, it enables the animation.

Could use a better contrast.

And showing up flair.

I like the new look especially how you used the Greek Letter Zeta in the header.

The animated header is bad. I don't like the default purple either... I would make it the blue color that it first changes to.

I would just remove the flair. Or replace it with dog paws/horseshoes/etc. to represent what we're attracted to?

It took me a while to figure out that you had to hover over the circle to see the flair. Maybe if there was a way to have the text always showing, but still have a colored background? I'm attracted to some more "unconventional" species, and large groups of species, and it's nice to be able to just write them instead of trying to pick from an icon or symbol to represent them. Like, I just have "ungulates" in my flair because that's easier to write out than every single species (plus they couldn't all fit in a flair anyway), and snakes are the "unconventional" one. So for me personally just symbols wouldn't work out too well, even though I think they'd look nice.

Not too sure how Reddit formatting works, I guess a text flair with the option to add a symbol or two would be the ideal, but I don't even know if that's really possible to do haha.

Removing the rollover effect is certainly possible. I still like the colored backgrounds as well personally, but there are quite a few ways we could implement these "refreshed" user flair tags. We have just been going through working out some kinks and figuring out what is best for the community. This is only the first implementation and changes surely can be made for the benefit of the community if they so desire.

The one thing I have to mention is that the larger header makes stealthy browsing a bit more difficult. I like it though, makes this sub look super professional. first impressions count so hopefully when people come in to argue with us they are at least impressed with the CSS :P

Stealthy browsing, I like it. How would you feel about being able to toggle between this and this?

actuallynotazoophile ok, I lied 2 points on 2015-04-20 03:38:33

LOVE the second one! Even disregarding stealth, I think I prefer the latter.

oh and if we could toggle between the two, even better. presumably some people would prefer the former.

Yup, already taken care of, the separate links were mostly for display. The button for it is at the top right of the header, next to the animation option. And again, I like the idea of a more stealthy option, so I'm glad you mentioned it.

edit: just seen its only on the beta sub at the mo. thats perfect.

I think i'm being an idiot, I cant see where to change it, the only button I get at the top right of the banner says 'edit' and takes me to the list of subreddits...?

I have the new CSS turned off because it doesn't work with RES night mode. My eyes can't handle white websites.

Yearningmice 2 points on 2015-04-20 18:58:08

Two things to give extra thought about...

First, disabled or older users will have trouble with some of the colour choices which might make it hard to read or even drive them say. Developing CSS for sites like this must be inclusive because I've known several blind zoos who have just enough vision to use a computer.

Second, can we have a more compact mobile version with higher contrast?

Thank you for the efforts so far. I know how much work it can be to get things right.

AliasTheReindeerPone Short Christmas Horse 2 points on 2015-04-20 19:45:47

If you don't mind me defending the current design for just a moment; the color scheme (Aside from the flairs) isn't all that different from reddit's default, which /r/zoophilia was previously using. I agree that this sub should be accessible to everybody, although as /u/Battlecrops' zoophile survey shows, the majority of zoophiles here aren't exactly elderly. Because of this, I feel that accommodation should be opt in rather than default.

With that in mind, I can probably hammer out a higher contrast version for those who need it, and it could function similarly to the stealth and rainbow alternatives currently in /r/ZetaBeta. I can also get to work on a mobile version, although I've never toyed around with that on reddit, so I can't promise it will be here with any haste.

Thank you for the considerations, and for presenting them in a considerate way.

Yearningmice 2 points on 2015-04-20 22:03:11

Well, I would hope that this place will grow. Considering the numbers of older zoos I know who do follow this sub and the fact it hurts nothing to be accommodating I thought I'd mention it.

I would also point out that the survey doesn't say anything about who is here, rather who is here that would answer the survey.

As it stands however, it's the best data we have to work with. Not that I mean to speak out against accommodation; it's a perfectly sensible thing to keep in mind. It's just that from a design standpoint, you don't tear down a nice set of stairs simply because you want to build an elevator. Having both options available seems the most reasonable.

I did begin to work out an alternative for the visually impaired, which can be toggled on and off. So far it offers higher contrast and larger text. I also plan to decolor this mode's flairs once I have a bit of time. If there's anything I'm missing, feel free to let me know.

Embarrassing. It's a disgraceful, clownish attempt at fixing a non-issue.
