Well, not to be a link whore or anything, but this appealed to my currently morbid sense today.

Seems a harsh punishment for a bit of harmless fun. And how is the dog at fault at all? How we've progressed as a species since then. We don't burn people at the stake anymore, we only label them felons or sex offenders and ruin their lives.

Not dying by a bullet, but by being strangled, ouch.

A proper hanging should break the neck upon reaching the end of the rope, making death relatively quick and painless. Given the crude technology of the times, I doubt Claudine and her canine friend's execution was handled properly.

On the other side of the pond, we had the first hanging in what would become the United States, Thomas Granger. A poor farmboy who happened to learn about bestiality in England, he apparently had a lot of practice, which was unfortunate for the animals because according to Levitical law (these were Puritans), the animals were killed in front of him and then him. I hadn't read the direct journal entry before now, and it strikes me as odd that Governor Bradford started complaining about immigration of all things to explain this crime.
