Wow, can't believe it is legal to fire somebody over that there... I do not say this often, but that really shouldn't be legal, he was not even at work and that did not even affect his at work life at all.

Yearningmice 3 points on 2015-07-03 15:47:01

They didn't even need to give a reason, the whole "at will" thing is meant to keep employees nervous.

Yes, but this means the company basically owns you, even your life at home is grounds for firing, its two steps away from slavery.

I can totally understand why they fired this guy. The guy is in marketing for Christ's sake. I'm sure he understands the importance of corporate image. That post just alienated a whole segment of potential clients for his company; they had to fire him, basically. He really should have fucking known better.

Yes, but this was his at home life, had nothing to do with the company. The company does not own his at home life.

ZoroasterTheCat 1 point on 2015-07-05 14:31:52

They do not, but they employ a man that works as the customer-facing representative of the company. His home life and his personal reputation will affect his clients' perceptions. Think of it this way, if you were gay, hypothetically, and a perspective client being courted by two companies, you could go with the one who makes homophobic jokes, or the one who does not; this man just cost his company a customer. So in that way, his 'at home life' IS his 'at work' life.

Perhaps, but I do not like how it feels. We should not have to stress about work while at home, it should be where we can unwind and all that. I know I would not work for that company after hearing that article.

He does come off as an impulsive moron, much like "The reason I'm coming forward about this is that I don't want anyone to make the same mistake I did about posting jokes like this on Facebook" is blatantly disingenous. But there's also no way this exposure can do anything good for his status (except minimal damage control he could have done smoother). He isn't thinking things through.

Yearningmice 1 point on 2015-07-04 00:11:36

Can disagree. Sounds like a homophobe too, with an excuse.

"I was blindsided," he told The Huffington Post. "I didn't think anyone there knew how to use Facebook."

Fucking savage.

I like this guy's style.

Happens all the time, unfortunately. It's especially bad when some marginalized group (gays, feminists, black people) can take offense to it.

Yearningmice 5 points on 2015-07-03 15:37:15

Remember this when someone gets fired for saying something you didn't like and you're all "Right on!" I'm still not sure why we believe what happens on FB has ANYTHING to do with someone's job. It's like drug testing for pot, if you have only ever smoked it on the weekend with enough time to be sober before work... not a work issue.

Also,

Grace Investment Group hasn't confirmed whether the post was why Uhler was canned, but it doesn't have to: Florida is an "at will" state, which means employers can fire workers for any reason and without notice

Workers rights have been completely eroded in the US.

there must be something else going on behind the scenes. this facebook post just gives the company a nice little scapegoat.

Yearningmice 3 points on 2015-07-03 15:57:29

Yea, but the point is, they don't need a reason. That's what "at will" means in this context. So why make him a public figure. Just fire his ass and tell him to fuck off.

actuallynotazoophile ok, I lied 2 points on 2015-07-03 16:16:01

Maybe, but now he's going to be thinking "did I get fired for the facebook thing or was it that arguement I had with Dave last month..."

Besides, he made himself a public figure by going to huffpo.

Can't people have a sense of humor and post jokes on personal facebook pages without fear of retribution? The firing of this person says otherwise.

I don't think this actually has anything to do with zoophilia. I can see it from both sides; don't know how I feel about Facebook influencing work, but wouldn't want an openly homophobic guy working for my company.
