Upon seeing this, I couldn't help but think about all the people who are completely willing to accept that a horse can like being scratched, want to be scratched more and even solicit scratching, but who nevertheless maintain that animals can't consent to sex. It's rather confusing.

So true. A 1000 lb horse would tear you to shreds if it didn't consent to sex.

Who says animals can't enthusiastically consent?

  • Religious people. It says it in the Bible.
  • Extreme animal rights. The ones that say it is better for humans to go extinct.

They're crazy, right? I would say so, but they have political power.

Actually, with the religious people, it's not really an issue of consent or even ethics, it's just a dogmatic "this book says it's bad so it's bad" thing. They don't need to justify it.

Well, according to Christianity, people are fundamentally different than animals because they were made in the image of God. Having sex with an animal is wrong (at least in part) because it is degrading for the human, not because any harm will necessarily come to the animal.

When I was a kid, I was told that Victorian England's anti-nudity laws were justified for the same reason — that it's degrading even to everyone, even the human who chose to be naked.

I think it's funny how people are so in awe over stuff like this. If you understand an animal's behavior, and have a desire to make them feel good, reactions like this are not uncommon. I can elicit this response from just about any horse I come in contact with. One of the best ways to a horse's heart (besides food) is to find all the spots they cannot scratch themselves and offer them a helping hand. There are few things better than making an equine melt.
