Cannabist: So if someone’s sexuality is hurting themselves or others, that’s the point where we should recommend psychiatric help. What about when it comes to bestiality?
[Dan] Savage: We draw a very hypocritical line when it comes to bestiality. And I say this as someone who is completely, 100 percent in favor of that taboo. We say animals can’t consent (with bestiality), but then we eat them. They didn’t consent to that. We’re very, very fussy when it comes to animals and sex, but not when it comes to breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Cannabist: I think I’m too high for the bestiality conversation. Tell me about your experiences with pot. When did you get high for the first time?

That's excellent and that's the entire point. But Savage rejects bestiality because he's not a Zoo, that's understandable. It's just nice to see more people point out the problem with the consent issue.

It kinda bugs me when people try to bring it up and discuss the ethics of zoophilia and it just gets shut down immediately because presumably it's making too much sense.

At least this time it was a sensible shut-down. "I think I’m too high for the bestiality conversation" sounded honest.

That was a fun interview to read. Sounds like he himself wouldnt have any problems showing a zoo film at Hump. Who knows whats going to happen in the future...

Interesting. He put it much clearer in this interview than when I called in to savage love.

You called in? What did he say then?

There was some snickering, but knowing (assuming/taking my word for the fact that I'm absolutely the opposite of an abuser) he couldn't find fault. Aside from what we'd call fence hopping, but with dogs.

I appreciate Dan Savage's even-handedness on this topic. Granted, he hears about pretty much everything sexual, so he has some perspective on how wrong each given act is or could be. He doesn't approve of it (along with scat fetish, pedophilia, and necrophilia on his absolute no-nos), but he can see the other side of the argument somewhat, and could be reasoned with on his position.
Hmm, interesting.
