Older article but I haven't seen it here (but a similar one I think?).

If we went a step further and granted dogs rights of personhood, they would be afforded additional protection against exploitation. Puppy mills, laboratory dogs and dog racing would be banned for violating the basic right of self-determination of a person.

I suspect that society is many years away from considering dogs as persons. However, recent rulings by the Supreme Court have included neuroscientific findings that open the door to such a possibility.

Yes please.

neat. I remember reading they were doing this but they hadnt got any results back then.

A part of me cant help thinking this will cause the S/N people to double down on their rhetoric that we need to S/N dogs for their own benefit. Their thinking will be along the lines of, "we cant have dogs breeding with one another due to the amount of puppies that would introduce into the world but its cruel to deny them the sex they desire if they are entire. Therefore its more humane of us to strip them of their sexual desire entirely so that we arent denying a core part of the dogs lives."

Or something along those lines.

I wonder how long it will be until vasectomies are widely accepted as a better solution.

mhmm theres definitely the possibility of it going in that direction. Surely its only a matter of time until people wake up to how barbaric and insulting S/N procedures are.

I doubt vasectomies will ever become an widely accepted alternative. Many "normal" people see their animals as a substitute for kids, toys, status symbols etc. and do everything to avoid seeing these "lower life forms" as autonomous living beings. They just don´t want their toys, substitute kids and status smbols to have a sexuality. It´s not that much about caring for a possible overpopulation, it´s about having total control over the being at the other end of the leash. It´s about domination for many, not interspecies friendship. It´s about being the boss in charge of everything. It´s about forcing one´s own will onto another being. A vasectomy only gets rid of creating offspring, but the sexual impetus remains untouched and thus will never be accepted by the majority.

What did our societies do with slaves when we still had them? Did we stop them reproducing? Did we segregate them by gender? Did we let them do what they wanted, or did we beat them to induce stillbirths?

Our societies are not now what they were then. Humanity is both more uniform and more diverse than people seem to think, but what happened 200 years ago with slaves might inform what happens in 20 years with dogs.

Okay, so at the moment they only have solid proof like this for dogs. But I would think this would apply to a lot of animals. After all, the same hormones and parts of the brain exist in many other animals, not just humans and dogs. Getting a positive experience from doing stuff is key to training animals, for instance, you can train even fish to do tricks for you by using rewards!

Not really fond if this whole "they're like children" thing. Okay, better than considering them objects... But adult pets will have some needs/instincts that human children won't have. Not to mention wild animals that don't need any guardians, they survive fine by their own.
