A surprisingly neutral article on bestiality in ancient religions and the ideas behind it. Whether you agree to the given points of view or not, it surely is some interesting read...don´t miss out the other two parts. Just discovered it recently although the site it´s on is dedicated to this imaginary old man living in the sky...;) Surely surprising how neutral it is written. A good source of tracing back the practice of having sex with animals for religious reasons also...

This may be a little pedantic, but it's cute that their Leviticus citation is off by a verse. From the second part:

The extensive evidence of the practice of zoosexual magical ritual in the mother goddess fertility cult in ancient times (Leviticus 18: 22) merely reflects the practice in the Paleolithic animal fertility cult of its origins.

OK, let's look up Leviticus 18:22...

You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.

Oops... but wait, what's that in the context, to the right?

21: You shall not give any of your offspring to offer them to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God; I am the LORD.

22: You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.

23: Also you shall not have intercourse with any animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion.

Well, there it is. Also of interest, the punishments prescribed. From Leviticus 20:13-16

13: If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them.

14: If there is a man who marries a woman and her mother, it is immorality; both he and they shall be burned with fire, so that there will be no immorality in your midst.

15: If there is a man who lies with an animal, he shall surely be put to death; you shall also kill the animal.

16: If there is a woman who approaches any animal to mate with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them.

So our prohibitions are in the Bible, literally right next to the part about stoning gays, to take Stephen Colbert's phrase. Also, gay Christians pretty much explain these as prohibitions of joining the fertility cult of Molech. I wonder whether any would cite the immediate following verse as a reason not to have sex with animals? In sincerely hope that level of doublethink doesn't exist, but I'm pretty sure it does in other contexts.
