For reasons which will not be mentioned in this post I'll have to undergo surgery within the next few weeks, which will involve some anesthesia.

It may sound weird but it's not the procedure itself that's making me nervous or the risks that might be involved, but the things I might admit to either my family or a complete stranger, while I'm not in my right mind.

What if I'm going to let some dangerous information slip out or say something I can never take back and am going to regret? How do the rest of you handle this kind of situation?

I don't think anesthesia commonly has the effect of a 'truth serum'... And if you, unprobably, would say something, then you can always shrug it off as not true. After all, you were under the influence, of course you might make shit up, right?

[deleted] 2 points on 2016-02-19 01:01:40

I know that it's not the 'truth serum' but after seeing a number of people spouting out things they normally wouldn't say when they're 'waking up' from their anesthesia, I just get really uneasy.

Idk, I think people would shrug it off as weird nonsense. And honestly, having gone under anesthesia, either the effects are super over-exaggerated or I'm some kind of freak because I honestly didn't feel or act much different beyond being kinda dizzy and hungry.

I've heard of someone who became vegetarian because while waking up from anaesthetic they hallucinated their partner making a convincing argument for it.

So, regardless of what you end up saying, the only risk is if you make an easily testable claim to the sort of person who both already dislikes you and is likely to consider drug-induced rambling a good source of dirt. If you have people like that in your life, just don't let them visit you in the hospital.

think of all kinds of more ridiculous but not illegal things, such as wanting to bathe in egg yolks, or swim in a pool of jello, think of this before anastasia, if you do say something accidently, make sure to follow it up with those.

Aside from your topic, I'm just curious if your username is in reference to amanitas. (?)

[deleted] 2 points on 2016-02-19 07:19:09

amanitas

It's a butchered version of deoxyribonucleic acid (=DNA)

In the sixties and seventies, the CIA´s MK Ultra project tried to find a truth serum, but failed. If only they had known that an ordinary medical anaesthesia is capable of doing this.... Irony mode off

Don´t worry, this is NOT how anaesthetics work, even drugs like LSD, psilocybin, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and DMT don´t work that way. Trust me, I´m an experienced drug user and had several different types of anaesthesia during my life. ;)

Thanks for the encouraging reply. Glad to know that I was worried for no good reason. :)

I always wondered... From the US you see these videos where people come from the dentist totally high on some drugs saying the weirdest things. And here in germany, all I got from dentists are numbing of the area and feeling a bit tired. And even after full anesthesia I only feel tired but totally clear apart from that. Are they using different anesthesia drugs in the US?

30-30 amator equae 2 points on 2016-02-19 08:23:28

AFAIK, yes. When I remember it right, they still use nitrous oxide in the US. I´ve had my experiences with it, but this common "garbage rap" you experience while under the influence isn´t something that reveals your secrets, it´s more of a non directed gibberish based on the actual stimuli received at this moment. I wouldn´t call it "high", ´cause you don´t feel good, uplifted etc...it´s just some kind of special dizzyness. It wears off in a rather short time, also. If you´re an adult experienced with psychedelic drug effects, you can suppress the "garbage rap" by will, so it´s not completely out of your control if and what you say during the influence.

Funny stuff...but one of the comments made me laugh even more... "It´s only gay if the balls touch"...WTF? :)))

Edit: These self dissolution effects and hallucinations of losing a body part strongly hint at ketamine, a very strong anaesthetic with vast psychedelic effects. Using ketamine can lead to a trip lasting up to 48 hours. Ketamine is used by vets to anaesthize horses when undergoing surgery, for example. I tried it myself, but will probably not do it again. Long lasting, mighty effects unlike those of acid, particularly unpleasant to endure for over a day´s time, interfering with sleep. Keep in mind that dosage of medical ketamine is way below the dosage of "recreational use".I would bet it´s ketamine that evokes these effects.

When I was younger my dentist used nitrous oxide (aka 'laughing gas'), but in Sweden it's very rare. But I enjoyed the sensation. I don't use illegal drugs, so I don't have much to compare to, but I think the feeling was similar to being very sleepy in a good way. But as 30-30 points out, after you stop breathing it in, it wears off quickly.

zootrashcan doggy doodle dandy 1 point on 2016-02-20 01:54:08

I'm in the US haven't had much dental work done, but I have received local numbing agents (both as shots and an ointment thing) and gone under anesthesia, and my experiences are the same. I'm guessing that while it probably effects others different, the majority are probably over-exaggerated for funny videos/stories.

Funny, I had this thought many times...

But the anesthesias I had so far in my life, only made me sleep or numb, but never "high". I don't know what is used in different countries though.

This is a real, valid general concern (for once!).

In the long run, you should practice your skills of compartmentalization in every day life more often. Learn to instinctively keep facets of your life separate and become more mindful of self-preservation.

If it's ingrained in your psyche, your developed survival instinct will survive many drugs. Even when I've been intoxicated 5 days straight near blackout I've managed to lie and invent stories to save myself from life threatening situations. The most excellent part is that most assume alcohol is a truth serum and there's no way you could be telling fibs.

I'd only worry about morphine or the like if you live normally in a very repressed state of wanting to divulge details about your life. If so you should prepare some alibis for why you might will have said what you might will have.

hmmm. may i suggest duct tape? :P

in all seriousness, you shouldnt worry. if you do say something, try to just laugh it off and say it was just due to the drugs and you trying to make a lame joke.

at least thats what i did the first time i got drunk and made a sexual remark at my friend's dog.

If anesthesia has the effect of making you say things you'd rather not, you can always blame the anesthesia for making you "talk nonsense"

Rannoch2002 Deer Zoo 2 points on 2016-02-20 02:07:39

The worst I ever said under anesthesia was "Deer are like land dolphins!"

No one thought much of it. People say weird shit when under. It's not unusual.

ThrowwwayGurl 2 points on 2016-02-21 04:29:58

Anesthesiologists hear so much mumbling nonsense that they mostly tune it out.
