knotty.me aquired by domain snipers (self.zoophilia)
submitted 2016-02-24 15:36:21 by Rannoch2002 Deer Zoo

EDIT: It appeared we had been domain sniped, but it was actually just the domain redemption period and sillycollie has renewed the name. All returns to normal, carry on.

About 10 minutes ago I saw a domain expired message. Tried it now and (to my surprise) it loads up the forum again as if nothing happened? Not entirely sure yet how much I can trust this just yet...

I think you are seeing DNS propogation issues. That is temporary, and will eventually go away for you like everyone, but if you can get the site IP we can manually browse to it!

Type the following in a dos prompt:

ping knotty.me.

Please post the results. It would help immensely. I could at least hold up the old forums under a new name for a bit.

PS: As for the domain being aquired, it's fact. See this:

nevermind, my cellphone was experiencing the same DNS issue and I got the IP:

https://192.254.229.131/

Use this to browse to it until I get something better setup. It will have a certificate error. This is unavoidable without sillycollie's help.

Nowix 1 point on 2016-02-24 15:51:48

Nope. Lost it sadly. I either get a blank page or a domain expired page :( Seems to me Tor going funny. Not planning to attempt to reach it without Tor though, just in case. Resolving the address without tor just gives me the new IP.

Rannoch2002 Deer Zoo 1 point on 2016-02-24 15:56:23

I got the IP on my cell. Government probably spied on me while I did it, but fuck, I had to take some level of risk. The direct ip should work with TOR.

That really sucks, I was just thinking yesterday how I need to check there and catch up on things again. I hope they can get the domain back so folks can still access it. If they end up with a new one, I wonder how they'd let all the members know?

SillyCollie never seemed very active, I hope he's around to figure something out at least.

I got to the forum page from the IP address but it won't let me login, it takes me to an error page, so I guess that's useless for me. ):

Feh or SillyCollie (hopefully feh, as he's been around) should be able to send out a bulk email notification to all registered members.

Otherwise, there's reddit. Not the best way to get the word out, but something...

zootrashcan doggy doodle dandy 1 point on 2016-02-24 19:58:36

Aw, boo. Not surprising, but disappointing. What's funny is I looked at SillyCollie's profile and it said that he had visited in January. Someone, perhaps Feh or another active member, purchasing it from SillyCollie is probably going to be the best bet for it staying online, assuming both that it really is in a 'redemption period' and that SillyCollie renews it.

Rannoch2002 Deer Zoo 1 point on 2016-02-24 20:09:41

Yeah, that's my line of thought as well.

The redemption period thing only applies to some domain registrars, so it might not be the case and we may already be fucked. But I'm holding out hope.

zootrashcan doggy doodle dandy 1 point on 2016-02-24 21:50:29

That the site is currently giving renewal instructions that don't read like a hostage letter makes it look like there might be some hope.

Rannoch2002 Deer Zoo 1 point on 2016-02-24 21:54:40

That's my hope, but the group that aquired it ("namecheap"_ has no affiliation with hostgator, what sillycollie used, AFAIK. So... Maybe? I dunno. I hope it'll come back. I've emailed sillycollie's contact email to alert him, at any rate.

And here I get on today for a daily browsing of knotty...

I2P is a good project but it's not popular or accessible enough. .onion is more accessible but if the host is concerned about its own anonymity over long period, it's best not to rely on .onion (or eepsite), and sign up for a hosting provider/vps that accepts bitcoin and doesn't check details and enter fake credentials, and access it over Tor (extra VPN chained if problems accessing). The advantage of .onion for the host is not so much the protocol but that you can skip DNS and SSL cert registration.

There was a zoo portal forum on the deepweb that got canned around when Freedom Hosting got raided by the FBI. It worked fine.

For users the most anonymous and safe browsing option has always been aggregate communities like reddit or 8chan, because the target hostname/ip doesn't divulge what you're browsing (in onionland drug bust court cases, target .onion addresses were used to show intention; .onion has had some weaknesses; with plain https over regular internet, WiFI and Tor exit nodes, everyone can see your target host to some degree).

Rannoch2002 Deer Zoo 1 point on 2016-02-24 22:42:33

I'm just familiar with i2p and trust it more, I can do either.

Thing is though, both have web bridges which likely most everyone non-technical will use. So accessibility is a non-issue.

ninebitches 2 points on 2016-02-24 22:53:25

Portals like onion.city cause problems of their own. Users have to connect to the pages through Tor to be anonymous to the portal itself. It misleads people, IIRC some pedos got caught by using those portals in the clear.

When you use portals this way you have an extra Tor circuit which makes it slower and connection problems. So your regular users are all forced to install the Tor or I2P client in the end.

(Not to mention it's a middle man and you never want to submit account/session information over them.)

Rannoch2002 Deer Zoo 1 point on 2016-02-24 23:07:12

Meh, good point, have an upvote...

I may pursue a different route, but the thing is, I don't have the money to pay for a dedicated site at the moment (I'm currently very broke). I was going to set up a little core 2 duo box to avoid hosting fees, but that would expose my home ip without onion or i2p... yeah, not happening I guess.

The middleman point is my main concern. I2p portals not being anonymous to the portal I wouldn't worry about, those guys are adherents to privacy to almost an extreme degree, and even if you don't trust them, discussion of zoophilia is not illegal.

Either way, my main concern is my privacy, not yours, as selfish as it sounds. If you want your privacy, you are responsible for it: you can install the proper client. That would've been made clear.

Updated the sidebar to reflect this.

It appears to have been a false alarm, sorry.

And it's back...

Sorry for the hoopla over nothing, it looked suspicious.

Battlecrops dogs, cats, snakes, ungulates 1 point on 2016-02-25 04:48:40

So does the domain have redemption periods normally, and the owner just has to renew it? I don't know much about how this stuff works. So if it hadn't have been renewed, would it be up for grabs then?

Good thing SillyCollie was around at least to renew it, ha.

Rannoch2002 Deer Zoo 1 point on 2016-02-27 05:01:53

I think it depends on registrar, but not sure. I used to be up to date on this stuff, not so much anymore... I was surprised by some of the new top level domains recently, for example...

zoozooz 1 point on 2016-03-06 23:06:36

Is it normal that it is indexed by google? I don't think it was, so far. https://www.google.com/#q=site:www.forum.knotty.me%2Fviewtopic.php

Rannoch2002 Deer Zoo 1 point on 2016-03-07 00:55:55

It has been since day 1 (despite my objections, I may add).

I'm just kind of confused by all of this. What is knotty.me? I apologize in advance for my ignorance.

another zoo forum. the URL always looked odd to me, but it is a valid one.

Our sister-discussion-board forum thing. It's listed on the sidebar.
