Covering up your internet footprints (self.zoophilia)
submitted 2016-06-08 13:52:34 by Crazy_ManMan Not a zoo, but a friend.

As many of you may or may not know, it is surprisingly easy to find all sorts of personal information online about somebody as long as you know their real name including ones actual home address, who they live with, aliases, etc etc, and since many of you have reason to keep this information hidden I thought I would share a few tips with you to cover your internet tracks. First search your name and scroll through the results. Make sure to search all versions of your name and aliases (1st name middle name last name, 1st name middle initial last name, first name last name, 1st name alias last name, etc) This should find a few results of where you come up, in most cases it is as simple as contacting the website who has it up to have it removed. Be sure to also search images for any pictures of yourself as those you will want to have taken down ASAP as they are one of the most sure fire ways to be tracked down. I also recently discovered https://onerep.com/ which will find what places have your personal information on public display. I just use the free parts that do not require login personally as I am not sure how much I trust them as I just found the site. Just taking this little steps will help make you harder to find should some mentally unstable person not like your lifestyle choice or some cyberbully decide to make you their next target. I hope this helps you all. :) I also want to make a note that I do not mean to be an alarmist. Most likely you will be perfectly safe if you completely ignore this post, but for those of you who want to take extra steps, or believe somebody may actually be trying to find you this may be useful information to you.

I guss its important to know how to erase digital foot prints but I usually I don't engage in online zoo activity so I leave very little foot prints to follow. But still always open to learning new things.

I figure most people here probably know how to keep themselves hidden enough that one can not find their real names so easily, but I think it is good information to know. If it helps just one person it was worth my time.

Thanks for the advice!

To add on, it is also highly recommended to keep your personal life entirely separate from your zoo life. I use a fully separate email account so there is no tying back to any personal addresses or addresses I've used for other things. A VPN is even more help and very cheap, allowing you to mask your IP address and therefore your location which can be tracked(sites like tumblr allow users to run plugins on their blogs which can do this). Then of course never using specific locations and never uploading pictures with recognizable pieces of information. It might not be quite as big a deal safety-wise in a dense city but for most places all of the above are some good tips.

I don't do anything bad. However I have gotten numerous threats of doxxing and therefore think it is good to be careful with my information. You never know what happenstance may bring.

I find it rather strange how willing people are to give out their personal information online. I try my best to never give out accurate information regarding myself (and yes, that means I avoid all social media sites).

I'm sure someone sufficiently motivated could find information on me, but the easiest way I can think to do that would be entirely pointless, because it would be linked to my real-life zoo activism, and there's really no point outing someone if they're already discussing the issue in person.

You might as well reveal the shocking truth about how Oprah was really a woman all along, the scandal!

(Seriously though Facebook is terrible and I don't understand why people are so comfortable using it)

Much of your personal information such as you address is posted online by bots that build people search sites based on public record information, so even if you never owned a computer people can probably find things on you.

Personally I use Facebook to stay in contact with friends as I am not a very social being, sticking mostly to myself and the woods where humans can be far away from me (and it smells better in the woods).

Sure, but that information is completely divorced from my online presence, so that is, to me, a separate issue.

true, as long as they do not know you real name they can not find you.

Hmm all i can find of my name is stuff family has uploaded. I don't use my real name, the only place I use my real name is my personal email account, and facebook, which I upload nothing onto, which are both NOT linked to any other "condemning" accounts.

Most of the stuff I found were simply coincidence and had nothing to do with me, a coincidental use of my name or unique surname. I was surprised, i thought I'd find more. But using that onerep was weird, i don't even live in the US, I don't even know these websites, why does my name come up? creepy...

But thanks for the info anyway :)

They use bots that go through all kinds of records and such to build those sites with your information. I do not like it at all.

I'm very careful now days

I'm sure you mean well, but I must take conflict with your advice about OneRep. One of the best ways to hide your identity online is to not enter your name at all unless absolutely neccesary. Sites that claim to "scrub" or "find" where your name is listed on the internet are just as likely to sell your information as anywhere when you put it in that input field. In the case of the above site, it would not surprise me at all if they are connected to one of the millions of "find a person" sites online and just stockpile info all while appearing to provide a legitimate service.

that is why I do not make an account. Then they do not know if it is even me entering the name.

Rannoch2002 Deer Zoo 1 point on 2016-06-09 07:11:41

Fair enough, I guess I did not look too closely at what they request. I do see now at second glance they request a state to go with your name, but that's about it. Still worth noting.

Crazy_ManMan Not a zoo, but a friend. 1 point on 2016-06-09 12:47:12

Yeah, I am not too concerned with people knowing what state I am in. That still leaves a huge area to cover.
