Well, folks, autism has become quite a buzzword for almost any social incapability these days. Hopefully all you autists know there are several degrees of autism and that autism includes a whole spectrum of symptoms, from mild to really severe. Autism originates in the Greek word "autós" , translating to "yourself". One basic "feature" of autism is living kinda "encapsuled" in your own world and contacting the outside world is not at all desired by autists. But since all of you autists seem to have no problem with making contact, building friendships (although they might be cut down to only a few friends) and socialising , at least in here, I´d assume that your autism rather is some form of social ineptness that is diagnosed as autism because that´s how you sell large quantities of psychopharmaceuticals although real severe autism is rare. Kinda like what has been done with this ADHD stuff...funny that my generation managed to grow up without all of that overpsychoanalysing every single character trait as a disease. What you call autism now was called shyness in my childhood. Overactive kid? We Germans called that "Zappelphilipp" and dealt with them just normally, without any medication.

The reason diagnoses of things like autism and ADHD are becoming more common is that we simply have words for these things now. We know what to look for, and the people that used to have to, as you say, "deal with it" can find treatments, not just in pharmaceuticals, but also in therapy and strategies that help alleviate many of the symptoms, regardless of a person's place on the spectrum.
I wasn't diagnosed until very recently. I have a bachelor's degree and I am not medicated with anything to help some of my symptoms because it isn't currently necessary at this point in my life. Not every autistic person is mentally incapacitated as you seem to think. Most autistic people lead very normal lives, and many go their whole lives undiagnosed.
Just because something seems 'more common' (i.e. adhd/autism, LGBT individuals, cancer, etc.) doesn't mean these things are some kind of trend or 'fad' of our new generation. We are simply more aware of them and we as a society are more equipped to identify these things.
