What is your favorite music or music preference? (self.zoophilia)

It doesn't need to be topical, of course. Just wondering what you all are into.

I like all kinds of music. It would be fun to create my own EDM, actually.

Faovrite bands: The Police, Jethro Tull, Tyr

Guess I run the gamut of modern and classical rock. I also listen to filk, classical, little bit of country.

I play, poorly, a couple of instruments.

"Heavy horses, move the ground under me..."

It is noteworthy that I like those bands even when they don't qualify as my favorite.

The Synchronicity album moved my world.

But I was late to Jethro Tull, but luckily I'm now an old man with a beard to be feared! Even picked up the flute, I need more lessons!

I was turned on to Tyr more recently by a friend who recommended "Mare of My Night"

Edit: Despite the excellent theme of the song, I really enjoy much of their other music too... hehe...

I never really cared much for 'mainstream' music, or I should say... standalone music. I have a distinct preference for video game OSTs, lots of which I never even played, and music from anime, most of which I've also never watched. Transistor, Bastion, Bayonetta, and Ori and the Blind Forest are some of my favorite video game OSTs that I can remember. I don't remember which anime had good OSTs right now, though. Oh well.

I also like some indie composers that post their stuff to youtube, but they're somewhat sparse. Lucas King is a name to look out for if you like instrumentals or piano pieces.

Took me years to figure that preference out. I kinda wish I'd have discovered it sooner, since things do tend to get a bit dull without music, but eh.

I have a really weird taste of music.
I love video game OSTs and anime OSTs, so technically movie OSTs too but I'm not always really a movie guy.
This is because these OSTs remind me when I played / watched these games / animes and gives good memories.
And of course they sound very good because they're very fitting and are well made.
It can range from 8-bit music to music that was made live.
But I also like remixes, remastered versions or orchestras of such songs.
It's not even a specific genre. I can listen to sad music, horror music, tropical music, battle music, inspirational music, you name it. But it really depends what I'm in the mood for. There are exceptions because I listen to OSTs of games or animes that I haven't played or watched yet, too. Sometimes it even got me to check whatever that OST is from out.
These OSTs really are important to me. They make me think and fantasize a lot.

But there were times I listened to normal music which usually have singing.
I don't have a specific genre that I like there either.
I'm going to be honest, I don't really like humans singing as I don't think they really belong with music mostly. Is ''They aren't instruments.'' a good excuse?

Have you heard the Kid Icarus:Uprising OST? It's one of my personal favourites.

Not yet.
Never really played the games, but since it's Ninty I already know it's worth listening to.

Same here. I'm a HUGE fan of music from movies and games - I'd say about 50% of my music library is instrumental tracks.

My favourites are the Rome: Total War, Medieval 2: Total War and Red Dead Redemption OSTs, and as for movies... it's hard to say, really, but the Apocalypto soundtrack was my first love, followed by Her, Fury and basically anything by Hans Zimmer, from Inception to Interstellar and Man of Steel.

There's probably a whole lot more I can't think of at the moment, but I think I've summed up my wide range of tastes.

Some rap, pop, indie pop, indie folk, electronic, and some other stuff, I kinda rotate tastes a lot. Artists include flume, ta-ku, rüfüs, mononome, atmosphere, brother Ali, twenty one pilots, Stephen, hippie sabotage, brick +mortar, Witt Lowry, and a bunch of other stuff. Older classics of my generation too like 3 doors down Linkin Park green day and red hot chili peppers are all good in my book also.

All genres with an emphasis on technical/progressive thrash and speed metal.

Show tunes, especially Sondheim. I love Hamilton and Les Miserables in particular.

Since people are IDing their talents as well, I'm a pretty good singer, and just picked up a lute to try to learn it.

DoggoVonBitchmarck 3 points on 2017-03-29 22:54:35

If it's pretentious and made in the 70s I'll probably like it.

G_Shepherd fluffy wuffy 2 points on 2017-03-30 00:28:07

I'm all about the (swing) jazz, orchestra and classic rock. Nothing beats listening to some groovy tunes with a little laze in a chair. When I'm in a silly mood I enjoy parody music.

UntamedAnomaly 2 points on 2017-03-30 02:12:58

I like just about any genre. I probably listen to house, electronic, industrial, darkwave, deathrock, post-punk and metal more than anything else though.

As a few other people have stated, I'm a fan of all sorts of music. I've yet to find a genre that I can't enjoy, so I've been exploring all the genres I can possibly find, to find at least one song I like enough to save from them.

So far I'm up to 400 songs saved, spanning around 250 genres / subgenres / styles.

A few genres of recent songs: Skiffle, Wassoulou, Surf Rock, Progg, Ethno Jazz, and a Tone Poem.

How about chiptune? It can be a bit niche.

Swibblestein 2 points on 2017-03-30 18:46:38

Chiptunes are fine. Though what people classify as a chiptune seems to vary from person to person.

Does it include actual game music from old games? Does it include both 8- and 16-bit systems, or just 8-bit? Does it have to be composed to be able to be played on the sound-card of an actual system, or just made to emulate the sound of those sorts of systems? Can it have more modern sounds / instruments in addition to the chip's sounds?

I've gotten different answers to each of these at different times.

Ecco the Dolphin had a surprisingly amazing soundtrack though. Big fan of Medusa Bay in particular.

Also going to plug this. This is one that I've had some people call a chiptune and others say "no, definitely not". Either way I like it. A friend of mine made it for a game he's working on.

Anyhoo, point being, yes, chiptunes are enjoyable.

Ah, you might like the artist Chipzel. She started out making music off of a modded gameboy iirc, but she's taken a slight step back from 8 bit(now it's more a techno/chiptune hybrid if i had to say). Still an incredible artist.

All kinds of electronic music, alternative rock, some hip hop, and a little bit of 90's-00's pop music.

LupineRage 2 points on 2017-03-30 18:36:00

Everything from old, classic country to modern hard rock/metal and some rap. If it's good, I'll listen to it.

I personally really like EDM/Electronic and Instrumental/Epics Music stuff, for those who are curious by Instrumental/Epic Music I mean artists like Two Steps from Hell, Audiomachine, Future World Music, Hans Zimmer, etc. Check em out if you havent, they make some pretty neat music.

Oh,well...this is gonna be a textwall, I guess...

My musical taste is rather broad and includes many musical styles and subgenres. Traditional extreme metal (Napalm Death, Fear Factory, old Sepultura, old Korn, Brutal Truth et al. ) meets Industrial (Nine Inch Nails, Static X, Marilyn Manson et al.) meets Electronica of various genres (Rabbit Junk, Noisia, Enduser, Oliver Lieb a.k.a. Spicelab a.k.a. L.S.G., et al.) meets obscure musical projects like that of ex-Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris: Scorn (search for the "stealth" album on yt...and crank up the bass volume to max!) meets Einstürzende Neubauten meets Synthaxe-Wielder and Prog-Jazz god of uncommon cords Allan Holdsworth meets Africa Bambataa meets old punk and punk rock like Sex Pistols, Ramones meets old Gothic wave stuff (Killing Joke, Sisters of Mercy,Bauhaus) meets Jungle/Drum and Bass (Makai, Noisia when they´re doiung actual DnB, not goddamn dubstep) meets lots of Reggae and Dancehall meets old Hardcore and ska...the list is, as my CD collection I´m working on completion for more than 20 years now, infinite and incomplete.

And whenever I feel like I could use a dose of good ol´ nostalgia, I listen to all the 80s heroes than shaped my teen years, such as Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and all the other synthiepop bands sprouting in the 80s. I even like some 70s stuff, as an axe-wielder myself , there´s no way around Hendrix. I often play along with Dream Theaters debut "Images and words", but that´s only to improve accuracy and speed with complicated fingering patterns and stretches across the fretboard...DT´s music isn´t something I´d listen to voluntarily, tbh.

What else? I always had a latent interest in classical music and recently, it broke through the surface, forcing me to buy a few good classical CDs. I like Bach and his mathematical variations of scales and chord progressions, but prefer Beethoven for his ability to transport heavy impact emotions. The "Moonshine sonata" is a timeless masterpiece. I also like Vivaldi´s "four seasons" and Mahler´s works...I developed a large interest in John Cage over the years and see him as a predecessor of modern music that uses and instrumentalises "natural sounds" recorded and sampled in everyday life, with Bjork as the most prominent example for this kind of music.

Phew... that´s it for now.
