[☮]Why do you upvote or downvote? (self.zoophilia)
submitted 2017-03-30 15:53:45 by Yearningmice Zoophile

Vote. If you think something contributes to conversation, upvote it. If you think it does not contribute to the subreddit it is posted in or is off-topic in a particular community, downvote it.

I've been looking over the last two years worth of voting for the various threads and I wonder how people choose to upvote or downvote posts on this subreddit specifically.

Would it be good to give some specific guidelines to prevent needless downvoting? Is it worth upvoting things like news reports of people getting caught, or are they just passing blips, information to keep the pulse but not really germane to the main theme?

I am not sure I have any opinion either way except to note that in my research I noticed what I thought to be very odd trends. Things that should generally be upvoted I would have thought, are not, and things that are surprisingly upvoted don't seem to be great for us. Some of it seems to do with people attacking each other, threads with a lot of that sort of thing tend to get downvoted.

Each sub has its own ecosystem, but what do you think should be an average score here?

###This thread is in NO SALT mode!

Please be aware that rule 7 will be enforced more heavily in this thread and all disrespectful or derogatory comments in this thread will be immediately removed pending a report and moderator discretion.

Disrespect is defined as anything, intentional or unintentional, that appears to be meant to offend, shame, harass, or otherwise derogate another individual or group, within /r/zoophilia or without.

This does not include observations or fair criticisms whose verbiage is not inherently inflammatory and can be reasonably inferred or verified in some capacity. Potentially inflammatory opinions that are clarified as such and are in posts not intended to be inflammatory are not infractions. Our definition of disrespect is not meant to infringe upon freedom of speech, and if you think a post was wrongly marked for infraction, you are free to appeal it in a reply to a moderator's comment.

If you're unsure about whether your post has dangerously high sodium content, submit a modmail with a copy of your comment. We will tell you how to keep your comment heart healthy when needed.

I try my best to always give upvotes to posts and comments that make good contributions, esp in my threads. I try to keep personal feelings out of it for the most part.

Reddiquette encapsulates my feelings on the ideal voting trends quite well.

Please do

...

Vote. If you think something contributes to conversation, upvote it. If you think it does not contribute to the subreddit it is posted in or is off-topic in a particular community, downvote it.

...

In regard to voting, don't

Downvote an otherwise acceptable post because you don't personally like it. Think before you downvote and take a moment to ensure you're downvoting someone because they are not contributing to the community dialogue or discussion. If you simply take a moment to stop, think and examine your reasons for downvoting, rather than doing so out of an emotional reaction, you will ensure that your downvotes are given for good reasons.

Mass downvote someone else's posts. If it really is the content you have a problem with (as opposed to the person), by all means vote it down when you come upon it. But don't go out of your way to seek out an enemy's posts.

Moderate a story based on your opinion of its source. Quality of content is more important than who created it.

Upvote or downvote based just on the person that posted it. Don't upvote or downvote comments and posts just because the poster's username is familiar to you. Make your vote based on the content.

Report posts just because you do not like them. You should only be using the report button if the post breaks the subreddit rules.

Oh and I love how you almost always use no salt mode. It's brilliant lol

I never down-vote. I just don't, as a contribution is a contribution. Those I deem worth less I just leave alone, no down-vote, no comment.

I up-vote those posts I find are useful and contribute a meaningful opinion or artistic object to the community.

Those I think might be useful to some, though not to me, also may get an up-vote, though seldom a comment.

Just how I see the vote option being most useful.

I mostly upvote things I really like or would like to see again.
I never upvote for awareness because I use my upvote list to see these posts again, because one extra point isn't going to help and because it may be misleading. (Anyone can see my upvote list, wouldn't want people to think I like F'ed up stuff.)

As for downvoting I don't do it much.
If it's something I really dislike, something I don't want to see again or if something I don't think belongs in that sub, then I'll downvote it.

Sure, I could use the save and hide features from Reddit itself, but the 'save' one gets cramped and for the 'hide' one I don't want to always avoid all posts I have downvoted.

By the way, it's never personal and in most cases I refuse to vote because as I said, voting doesn't do much.

Now that I think about it... I'm still laughing at OPBeast today for downvoting our comments back in the day. It didn't even result in me losing 20~ comment karma. Stay classy, antis. 👌

To make upvotes and downvotes invisible on your profile, to other users, go here and scroll down to Privacy Options, then... make sure everything is unchecked in that subheader, actually.

WarCanine Love knows no boundaries between species or gender-Mᴬᴰᴬᴿᴬᴼ 1 point on 2017-03-30 18:34:30

I know.
But I don't see why I would limit people like that. I mean, the feature exists so... shrug
Sure, I said that I wouldn't upvote certain things because of that but I think it's only good if I don't upvote certain things, and also because my other points still stand.

And shouldn't ''don't allow search engines to index my user profile'' be checked for extra privacy?

Woops. Yeah, it should be.

I downvote posts that are rude or off-topic. I upvote anything that is interesting, polite or meaningful.

StarliteMagnificent Horse Nut 3 points on 2017-03-30 18:07:12

Never down vote and only up voted one because the post was pretty much exactly what I was thinking or going to say. Though personally I think it should not move the post itself in the order of it was posted as if it was some prize to be won to make the best post or something. Cause every opinion will vary greatly and I do not see the point of having it moved and mess up the order of the posts. Makes it a bit hard to follow why or how the thread progressed.

I'm going to be honest, yes. I do sometimes downvote when I feel like someone is being a jerk.

Not just that I disagree with them, mind you - I try to make a point to upvote things I disagree with if they are relevant to the question at hand, as long as the person is expressing at opinion in a moderate manner. And I will downvote people I agree with if their attitude is bad. But if someone is being prejudice in one way or another, yes, that threshold is easier to cross for me downvoting them.

Other than that, I downvote content that I don't think belongs here. Usually that applies to the various posts we get about "oh boy howdy I sure do like watching women getting banged by dogs" every so often. News stories are fine, though I often don't have much to say on them so I won't comment on such posts.

I try to upvote things I think are particularly well-written or well-said.

Overall, I actually tend to vote very little on comments and submissions. I have to try to force myself to vote on things most of the time.

I'd just like to add that I both down and up vote for the reasons many of you give. I downvote jerks, trolls, etc. I upvote anything that is reasoned or gives a different perspective that is not about causing fights. I try very hard to spend more time upvoting by at least 3:1 and try to upvote things I disagree with more than things I agree with to counteract the natural tendency to upvote what I like.

Of course, I'm not perfect.... :)

Yearningmice Zoophile 2 points on 2017-03-31 11:55:09

If you guys go and look back over the last two years of posts(surprisingly easy to do) do you notice a trend in the voting that seems odd? and if so can you describe what seems odd about it? I cannot quite put my finger on it, I just know something seems out of wack. I mean I know certain groups got in there and messed with stuff but... it doesn't seem that obvious...

I downvote basically anything that is either a.) insulting or rude or b.) completely logically incoherent. I really haven't ever down-voted much else.

I leave the vast majority of things neutral.

I generally upvote things that make me think or take a second look at the post (in a good way mind you), if you need semi-strict criteria.

ZooMasil 1 point on 2017-04-05 07:48:45

I would only downvote something for being ethically wrong or crazy stupid. As for as down voting rude things, I don't feel that it really contributes to the conversation. Rudeness is subjective and some of the truest and realest things are really rude, are feel > reals? you decide. As far as up voting, funny stuff, well reasoned stuff, and good shit in general.
