New CSS feature. (self.zoophilia)

Hope this doesn't shake things up too much.

This is probably just a temporary, 'for fun' kind of update on this sub, but the reason for this addition isn't so fun.

For anyone who isn't aware, CSS is a web language used for the styling of this subreddit, to make it unique and facilitate some of the added functionality and details in this community. It earned its place as an industry standard for its versatility and ease of use.

Reddit wants to remove that functionality, functionality used to make some of the most stunning visual interfaces on Reddit, and even the web, in favor of a toolbox of widgets and basic theming tools that may struggle to compete with the nuances of even our modest additions. There are some who would be entirely unaffected by this change assuming they still allow people to block custom themes, of course, and to them, the first sentence of this post is probably a bit enigmatic, but I'm certain others share my appreciation of the charm that CSS has brought this sub, and Reddit as a whole.

Behind the scenes, dozens of hours were put into refining what CSS enabled users see here; the interactive flairs, the animation in the header, the subtle sidebar trimming, and much more was made possible because of CSS. We only scratched the surface of what CSS can do for the community, too. So, while I hope we can have some fun with this addition, I have a more serious question to ask.

Does this community support keeping CSS as an option on Reddit, and joining in with the likes of /r/procss? It may be little more than a symbolic gesture, but enough small communities putting their foot down too can have a big difference.

You can use this feature by using #triggered in the link markup.

That checkbox'll disappear, yeah. :(

They haven't said whether you'll be able to disable the new custom themes.

duskwuff 1 point on 2017-05-01 03:35:22

No, I think you're missing my point. Let me put it another way:

This sort of obnoxious feature certainly makes an point in the CSS "argument", but probably not the one you intended.

AmoreBestia Pro-zoophile, non-zoophile. 1 point on 2017-05-01 03:49:32

Oh yes, I know it's obnoxious(hence the temporary bit, and why I planned on toning it down from the onset). But this may be a bit early to dismiss it. It's contextual, not terribly useful on its own, but like any markup, it's great in the right place. Context is king, after all.

What sucks is, if Reddit let us hook CSS to user variables on subs, we'd be able to make everything super configurable between people; we could implement options to disable certain markdown elements, let users control the heading color, and have a functional night mode on top of that customization, and even make it so you can minimize the sidebar.

I couldn't care less if nothing changed for us, and I'm not sure if that's true or not because I can barely think and read at 6AM while sleep drunk.
Y'know, I always loved the header. It's so relaxing and I find the dark colors to be romantic for some reason. I sometimes question who did it or who even made this sub...
As for supporting CSS on that sub you mentioned I have no idea. We're such a small sub and I find one itty bitty tiny vote to be useless.

AmoreBestia Pro-zoophile, non-zoophile. 1 point on 2017-05-01 03:53:30

There are smaller subs than ours pitching their support, fwiw. And yeah, I agree with you about the header being peaceful. It's custom too, if I recall. It's not present in the theme that this sub is based off, at least. I might be able to find the post for the initial css changes to the sub in a bit.

[deleted] 1 point on 2017-05-01 04:54:50

I mean, it doesn't hurt trying, then?
I sometimes wonder what people will do when they're aware this sub exists. I wouldn't expect that sub to go apeshit but it's just a thought since I've seen you talk about this sub outside of this sub.

AmoreBestia Pro-zoophile, non-zoophile. 1 point on 2017-05-01 06:08:20

Yeah, nobody would care too much about this sub specifically I don't think. Power in numbers, though. Well, it's the idea anyhow.

Oh wow. You really wanted to find that for me didn't you? Thanks, I guess.
Nothing important, but
Apparently the creator of this sub was called T-V, yet that brings me to an account with nothing in it's post history and 0 karma. But the [deleted] sign means the account was deleted. Mysterious.
Still confused by how Reddit works after all this time...

AmoreBestia Pro-zoophile, non-zoophile. 1 point on 2017-05-01 06:10:02

I assume that T-V was an abbreviated username, like how some people call me AB. If I get any info on it though, I'll PM you. I think I know what happened though.

Battlecrops cat kisser extraordinaire 1 point on 2017-05-01 08:23:12

Yes, that's an abbreviation. I knew them and their account name was different. It's since deleted, I think.

Also worth mentioning that T-V (Short for Tunrdroovy-volk) was not the original sub creator. I have no idea who that was. It's been "Deleted" as far as I can remember.

I'm indifferent. I like simple in my text based web apps. :)

Then again, I don't want to be stuck with a default interface that just doesn't make things readable, which seems to be the trend nowadays.

How, specifically, would we help support CSS on Reddit? I've done a little style sheet "programming" when I was running a website but it just seemed like it soaked up more time than anything and every browser had an exception.

AmoreBestia Pro-zoophile, non-zoophile. 1 point on 2017-05-01 20:34:20

We'd get a little badge in the sidebar, mainly.

CSS is one of those things that becomes extremely easy when you take some time to study it really well. Our stylesheet was actually based in large part on /r/DSCVRY. The great thing about reddit is that you can pass stylesheets around since the HTML is the same between them. Lots of mods like the triggered animation can be picked from other subs, but often the code is simple enough that anyone can make a minor addition pretty handily.

[deleted] 1 point on 2017-05-01 21:32:11

Ofc that sub has nightmode and this doesn't.
I sometimes wonder why there is no nightmode for any site that exists. Isn't that easy to implement?
For someone with very ''weak'' eyes, I really love the bright color white torturing my eyes, especially at night.
^^^off-topic ^^^complaint ^^^over

AmoreBestia Pro-zoophile, non-zoophile. 1 point on 2017-05-01 21:52:46

We could implement it if you want, short lived as it may be.

[deleted] 1 point on 2017-05-01 21:54:32

I don't want a feature added just for me.
I just thought it was weird there isn't a nightmode for everything.
And hey, now I had a chance to complain about it. shrug

AmoreBestia Pro-zoophile, non-zoophile. 1 point on 2017-05-01 23:50:12

RES nightmode functionality has been improved. It looks slightly shitty but given that it's taped together it isn't all that bad.

AmoreBestia Pro-zoophile, non-zoophile. 1 point on 2017-05-02 03:29:05

If you didn't know about it, Reddit Enhancement Suite is a chrome plugin that the CSS can hook into to do cool stuff that would be difficult or impossible to do with CSS alone.

The plugin is listed here, and has a night mode option that this sub is now more or less compatible with.
