Becoming an animal? What the article features is called zoomimesis, nothing more. And when a shaman tells you to go and look for "your" animal, he does not mean to do this in the real world, he´s talking about performing rituals getting your "normal" mind blown to smithereens for a couple of hours and let "your" animal find you. Typical misunderstanding of immaterial things by an overmaterialised species...

The author and the subjects of the article repeatedly demonstrated and reiterated that they understood it wasn't 'real'. It's a figure of speech, not something that they meant literally.
